Environment

Mayfield school caters for 13 classes, each having an interactive whiteboard and laptop safes.  Specialist rooms include a fitness suite, changing and showering facilities (these are available to external client groups), food technology room, hydrotherapy pool and a sensory studio.  The sensory studio has the lastest technology and is one of the best in the country.  Classrooms adopt a 'clutter free' policy in order to minimize arousal levels and reduce challenging behaviours.

We are committed to developing our wonderful grounds into learning environments.  The garden areas have been designed specifically to meet the needs of our students with raised flower beds, sensory flora and fauna and wheelchair friendly access.  Classes have access to planting beds to grow their own flowers or produce.

We have provided an environmently friendly play area incorporating wooden apparatus with trim trail and balance features designed to improve gross and fine motor skills.  A large basket swing is well used as a form of relaxation, and a willow arch compliments this area. The latest addition to the outside area is a music trail consisting of fixed instruments made from recycled plastic pipe and metal bars.  All instruments are frequently used.

A small fenced sporting area caters for basketball and football type activities.  All areas are accessible for all abilities.

Teachers use the grounds creatively for real learning opportunities, be it hunting for mini beasts, growing vegetables and flowers, recycling, exploring the weather, cooprative play, physical education and sport.
